Re the examples: As longer slurs were cut by hand there will
inevitably be some variation in their thickness.  Shorter slurs,
ties, laissez-vibrer ties and repeat ties were probably punched,
so were likely to be more uniform.  From these examples it seems
that the longer slurs are thicker than the shorter ones, and
given that the method of producing them was different there seems
to be no reason for long and short slurs to have the same thickness.
So, ultimately, making the slur thickness depend slightly on its
length seems the optimum.  As a step in that direction might it be
sensible to make the phrasing slur slightly thicker and the tie
slightly thinner than the slur for now?
