The previously used (it was in snippets/new) bar symbol -- @code{.|:}
-- was correct here. The dot before the pipe symbol is missing.

Not AFAICS:

http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.19/Documentation/snippets/
repeats#repeats-printing-a-repeat-sign-at-the-beginning-of-a-piece

The input is correct, the description is wrong:

@code{|:} bar line can be printed at the beginning of a piece.

should be

@code{.|:} bar line can be printed at the beginning of a piece.

Ok, the |: in the description is purely graphical, it's not lilypond
syntax... Maybe confusing?

Why not delete it?
We have something smiliar in the NR
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.19/Documentation/notation/long-repeats

In case we keep it, I'd suggest to change the description how it is
explained in the NR:
"
An ‘opening’ repeat mark is not, by default, printed in the first full
measure. However it is possible to add one by using \bar ".|:" before
the first note.
"

Cheers,
  Harm
