I know that Gmane has been down for months now, but according to
http://gmane.org/about/, it's just being rebuilt and will be back in commission
RealSoonNow™!
I have used Gmane to post to the LilyPond mailing list since I started six
years ago!
Given that the average person has never heard of an electronic mailing list nor
IRC, I think it would be more important to lower the barriers for new users!
I think a link to [this page on
Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_mailing_list) which
explains the unfamiliar concept very well, as well as [this
page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_relay_chat) on IRC.
I guess I'm talking more about http://lilypond.org/contact.html than the bugs
page, because it you're posting in the Bugs list than you probably know what a
mailing list is.
