The documentation stuff can be worked out -- if you had posted it on
Rietveld, Graham would have given you feedback.
And now you've got the right way to do it given to you:
Create a file language-init.ily that creates an alist of the key name
alists. Then have your \language function get the proper alist and assign
it, just like you're doing now.
And then adjust the LANG.ly files so that each of them just contains a call
to
\language "LANG"
And then you'll have the new, safe-mode-compatible infrastructure all set
up. And you can use it with your students.
