By the way, are there any good (enjoyable, informative) books out there about
the history of music engraving — or a snapshot of what it was like to work for,
e.g., Bärenreiter as a master engraver circa the 1960s?

Ross's 1970 book The Art of Music Engraving and Processing gives quite a
detailed account of the mechanics of engraving, describing the tools in detail,
and including some history.  It also has a decent bibliography of older books
covering the same subject and around it; a few of these are explicitly
historical:

Austin, Ernest - The Story of Music Printing (London, Lowe and Brydone Printers
Ltd)
King, A. Hyatt - Four Hundred Years of Music Printing (London, British Museum,
1964)
Pictorial History of Music Printing (Elkhart, Indiana, H. and A. Selmer Inc)
