Hmmm - I owe you all my deepest apologies... Removing all the "set
associatedVoice" phrases, it turned out that in the last of those items
I did not refer to "alto", but to "alto "; so with an extra trailing space.
Removed that, and hooray! it works as expected...
So for the moment I'll stay with that construct, since in this piece a
lot of work has already been done. But I've certainly learned something!
By the way, the composition is the Magnificat by Kim André Arnesen.
We ordered it for our choir, but were sent a wrong version (SS-SS in
stead of SATB); and the proper version will take some weeks to arrive.
To be able to rehearse it in the coming weeks I set parts of it from a
watermarked proof.
I'm as grateful as sorry.
regards, Jogchum

To my eye, they’re the same approach (at least fundamentally):
attach lyrics to a voice that has all necessary rhythms, and then
use some mechanism to turn display of the notes off.
Just a thought on another possible technique, although I haven’t used
it much if at all in my music:
Manual syllable durations might be a good option for you.

I hope this helps.
