Now, it is like this:

9 (number) is adding thirds up to number
.9 (.number) is add this note
^9 (^number) is remove this note
The display and the input syntax are (intentionally) seperated things:

What I would propose to add to the LilyPond chordmode (not sure if
clever or possible):
Adding notes without number in front of it:
c:.9  (= what is c:5.9 now)
Removing already works:
c:^3 = c:5^3

Concerning the display, "add" could turned on to be the prefix by
default for such chords (?).
