The archival quality probably isn't up there with Cibachrome, but it's said to be decent, and plus CMYK conversion isn't necessary. how much memory it would require to gimp something like this is a good question. and file size, too. i would guess that burning a cd would be one of the easiest options for taking it to a service bureau.
