A great deal of research is being done on jumping worms to try and find out how
to deal with them. So far, there are no proven methods of control, and I fear
they are to be part of our ’new normal’ along with ticks. They seem to prefer
good organic soil as their diet consists of all the organic matter in the soil
leaving behind something that looks like coffee grounds and provides little by
way of nutrition for the existing plants. They will die in compost that is
heated to over 140 degrees F. I have lined all my compost bins with cardboard
in order to achieve a hotter mix. The ones I find (often 100’s in the course
of a day) I drown in a bucket of water (just water works fine). At the end of
the day I decant the pile along the edge of the woods and they are gone in the
morning. Maybe an opossum or raccoon - my chickens won’t touch them.

Foresters and famers are the ones who have the most concern.. Good luck, Robin
