It was the begging call of a juvenile barred owl. Here’s a recording

It was freaking out my kids because it was right outside their bedroom
window and I was totally confused because I didn’t realize the juveniles
made that call. The closest thing I could think of was a screech owl but
that wasn’t it.

Thanks to everyone who replied! My kids are no longer freaked out!
