As someone who had a serious* gas leak in the front yard for years
(possibly decades), my experience: the gas company has a very, very long
list of leaks to repair, and they prioritize based on the severity of the
leak and the difficulty (cost) of repair. It may take a long time for any
given leak to get to the top of the list.

Here's a map of leaks: https://heet.org/gas-leaks/gas-leak-maps/

In our case, when the leak was eventually repaired, it was literally a
24-hour non-stop job involving three different shifts of gas company
workers, the place lit up like Alcatraz at night, and heavy equipment
digging up the road. And within a year, it was all for naught, because
they replaced the entire gas line on our road.

(*It was a leaky valve: you could hear the leak bubbling and if you put
dish detergent down the valve access, it would bubble up and make foam.
Fun!)
