This is in addition to Sara's comments.

During the Town Meeting discussion on going from a traditional dump to a
transfer station someone asked about roadside pickup. The response pointed out
that many people in Lincoln have long driveways and would have to put the trash
in their cars to get it to the end of the driveway. There was the concern,
that wild animals would get into the trash spreading it all over the ground.
Nobody proposed going to trash pickup and Town Meeting approved replacing the
dump with the transfer station.

Budget and staffing are drivers.
But so is it part of the culture and tradition.

Folks used to make the trip to “The Dump” a event for social engagement.
Lots of politicking took place at The Dump.
You could also see what your neighbors were consuming, what mail order
purchases looked like, what newspapers were being read…and, what “liquid
refreshments were being enjoyed.
You knew when someone had a big party…and you weren’t invited.

And, the swap shed finds furnished many a dorm room and first apartment.

We could tell when a new household had arrived as trash bins often appeared at
the end of the drive.
It often caused a certain titter.

It was a source of pride that we retained this small-town eccentricity-The Dump.
We were country!

We used to be smug in noting we sure weren't Weston but, I suspect times have
changed.
