Hopefully, the "unicode" characters won't get changed by the email client. If so, all you need to do is import a unicode doc with all of the characters that you need, and use what comes into Dir for your list(s).
And hope that you never have an instance of the things that go-together naturally, because every instance of �� is going to be translated, etc.
