I don't know about the media key thing, or how to know if the user has MPEG-2 playback ability. It sounds though that if you are producing something so demanding, it might be for a CD-ROM, and you have the installer for the things that they will need.

The Flash situation you mentioned would be normal, because it takes a moment to load in the new Flash movie before you can talk to it. Try this, maybe it'll work:

set the member of sprite (6) to member "flash2"
updatestage
sprite(6)._root.gotoAndStop(2)
