I think the problem is that people on this list are trying to keep
Director alive and
competitive in the face of rapidly changing technology and
applications. I always
hoped Director would become the universal media development tool,
with integral
support for 90% of what such applications require. And it is getting
better.
Macromedia already charges $1200 for their software, and it really
doesn't fire on
all cylinders - not great database support, proprietary language
(although that appears
to be slowing improving), often confusing alternatives between Flash
and Director,
limited to the stage metaphor (how many other apps are using that
metaphor for
developers?), and so on.
I don't recall anyone on this list making ad hominem attacks against
Tom. I have
worked at a number of big vendors, and it is often an uphill battle
to get management
to listen - to customers, to product marketers, to research reports,
etc. Managers
are just know-it-alls by their nature - the more senior they are, the
more they "know".
So I think I know what Tom is up against.
I think if you want to be in marketing/sales, you have to listen the
customer, no matter
what they say. He could be out selling Dell computers in the mall -
he is lucky to have
the job he has and I'll bet he knows it.
We just have to be careful not to over do it. :-} So far, I think
he does a much better
job of representing Director than most other product marketers at
other vendors. I hope
he would show this email to his boss with my praise for him and some
objective criticism
for his company.

I wonder where in Tom's contract it says "Takes abuse from
disgruntled customers who want to lash out at anyone they can get
to reply to an email".
Tom didn't make the decisions, so going after the one person that
is willing to sit, listen, and try to help is not going to get you
very far. A lot of us here realize he is the lone voice that
fights for us at MM and are really just sick of watching him get
beat up for things outside his control.

Aren't issues like this a key part of his _job_?
They are.
