First question to ask your client is if they are wanting SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 1.3 (Otherwise known as SCORM 2004). There is a huge difference in how they operate. SCORM 1.3 is far more advanced and complicated but offers a lot more.
This may be easier than you think, depending on the content that is on the CD's. If its just basic stuff that the user watches then you are in fat city. If its more complex and must report scores, user activity, support book marking, etc, then you have some work ahead of you. You definitely MUST know what version of SCORM they are running and which LMS brand they are using. If you decide to continue you'll need to install an LMS on your system for testing purposes. You can download a free LMS from the ADLnet.org. <http://www.adlnet.org/scorm/history/2004/srte.cfm> The current download is for SCORM 1.3. The 1.2 download is likely available somewhere on the site. Follow all the install instructions. Once you get that up, you can download a very basic Director SCORM 1.3 demo piece I wrote for ADL from <http://www.adlnet.org/scorm/history/2004/PITE.cfm> There is also a Flash sample that is identical in content. There are three pieces to your LMS work. The LMS itself, your content, and JavaScript which is the only manner in which to communicate between them. It can be simple, or very ugly depending on the content. If you get the basics figured out give me a holler and I can give you a library of about 150 JavaScript functions or so that Ive written to ease life for SCORM 1.3. Offered "As Is' of course! Here is a reasonable paper that Claude Ostyn has started but not finished. <http://www.ostyn.com/standards/docs/Eye_Of_The_SCORM_draft.pdf> No doubt by now you've beat your head and found very little on the Web about SCORM that was of much help to a developer. I dont know that I would write SCORM of just yet. The U.S. Dept of Def. has put forth direction indicating that in the near future ALL Dod cotnent MUST be SCORM conformant. Taiwan, Italy, and Canada are already big adaptors. It solves many problems by creating many more.
