On your home page specifically, or when you're generally surfing?
A lot of the better browsers (read iCab and Opera) have preferences
that let you disable popups. iCab will also block images based on
their size, so you can target banners of typical dimensions and nuke
them. It will also let you block images not originating from the same
server -- another hallmark of ads.
In fact iCab is a pretty damn decent browser all the way around.
