You're so kind. I think just using a person's last name is acceptable in some situations more than others. I can't really remember hearing my own last name much until I joined the R.A.F., and then that's all they used. You'll often hear Japanese men called "Yamaha San" or something like that, which only really means Mr. Yamaha. I know one Japanese guy who told me that it was upsetting to hear just his family name, without the San part (sans san, you might say in French).
