So you basically want to chromakey out the background, only showing the video foreground - the 3d animation.
Could I ask, since it's a 3d generated fire thing, why can't you render out a number of png/alpha'd files and create an animtion from that either using lingo (thereby having no directToStage problems) or bringing the sequence into flash and thereby retaining your alpha'd background?
