I haven't either--not since I wrote a video driver for the Apple II in assembler, and a driver for the IBM CGA and Hercules adaptors. Geez, that was close to 20 years ago. I guess pain leaves a lasting impression, no?
I too wrote assembler (actually, straight hex) for Apple II video, but I never knew I should call it a driver. I just had it change the data as fast as possible, and I didn't have the vertical blanking hack wire fixed either, otherwise I could have had completely tear free animation.
