I'm interested in why you prefer 2000 over XP. I use XP pro and, having used 2000 in the past, I like XP pro much better. It takes the stability of 2000 and improves the user interface and device cooperation of it. Especially when upgrading from Win 98, you don't have to worry about anything not working with XP; for a lot of devices, Win XP's drivers are as good as the ones that ship with the device. One issue to keep in mind with XP, though, is if you have two video cards; whereas Win XP supports virtually any video card as the primary video card, it only supports a few video cards as secondary cards. I use a GeForce 4MX 420 as my secondary card; you should be able to find a list of supported cards on Microsoft's site somewhere. One issue I ran into while developing on 2000, though is that there are some minor differences (at least, there were in Dir8) in developing on 2000 from 98 or XP. The one I noticed is that it reversed the foreground and background color references in lingo. That might have been fixed in later versions of Director, though. If you want an OS to use as a general use computer as well as an authoring computer, I would recommend XP, for its breadth of compatibility. (You can always tweak the visual options and make the windows look and render in the classic Windows' style, if you want to regain the clock cycles taken up by the XP skin, if that's an issue for you.) One other issue to consider is that XP has built in support for Type1 fonts, so if you use those frequently, I would definitely recommend XP over 2000.
