Now that's interesting. I can't seem to save an AIFF file with Sorensen
compression using QuickTime Pro (QTPro), Cool Edit, or SoundForge. In fact
QTPro for Windows won't even allow Sorensen compression on audio tracks for
.MOV files. Therefore, I can't test whether SF supports this format.
I wasn't even aware that there was a Sorensen audio codec, but then I'm one
of the few people in the world without the Media Cleaner/Sorensen package.
Note that Sound Forge doesn't recognize QT files. Just guessing, but
perhaps they were imported into Director on a MAC as AIFF files even though
they're actually QT?

These can be normally be found in the lower right corner of the SF window
or via File->Properties - if it is reading the file properly. It is also
available in Windows Explorer's file properties->Detail tab for many file
formats.
I've never seen a problem with bit rate, but then I've never seen a file
with other than an 8 or 16 bit rate.

Aha! Try saving the sound as AIFF or WAV with no compression from this
other sound editing software. Try resampling the audio at one of the old
"standard" SoundBlaster compatible rates of 44.1 kHz, 22.050 kHz, 11.025
kHz, or 8 kHz. There are still several PC sound card manufacturers that
refuse to accept a different sampling rate.
If SF can read the files after saving them from this other software, then
perhaps the original software saved in a non-standard format. Or perhaps
the files got corrupted during some transfer along the way.

This seems to conflict with one of the "Yes" answers above. Still, I've
found Sound Forge XP to be a very robust and reliable program through
various versions (all shipped with Director Studio).
/*** Troubleshooting continued ***/
We have learned that:
A. Some software besides Director can read these files.
B. Multiple machines with different sound cards show the symptom.
We still have several possibilities to eliminate:
1. Suspicious file format or compression codec (in my opinion)
2. Incompatible sample rate
3. Old sound card drivers
These can be narrowed down further by following the Save As suggestion
above and/or by finding the missing answers to the first set of questions.
And now, with the introduction of Sound Forge having trouble with known
good files:
4. Corrupt or incomplete SF installation
5. Possible hardware configuration conflicts with the sound card(s)
6. Operating system configuration muddle (not to sound technical)
Since you're seeing the same symptom on multiple machines with different
sound cards, items 5 and 6 are less likely culprits, though not necessarily
eliminated as possibilities. At this stage, I suspect item 1 is the most
likely cause.
More questions to consider:
Do these different machines all have the same OS and revision?
Out of curiosity (and OB Lingo), what Lingo are you using to playing the
sounds with Director? Are they actually on a sound track of an enhanced CD
that plays in an audio CD player? If so, then you will need to convert the
sound tracks to AIFF or WAV before SF can read them. Sound tracks on an
audio CD are neither AIFF nor WAV files, regardless of what they were
before burning the CD.
