I just checked our NT servers and you're right. After starting the
mac file service, you define mac shares in the server manager that
match the normal shares.
You can move a mac app around on the same NT volume with another PC
without breaking it. I tried moving a mac app to another NT mac share
and it does break, however.
Another alternative is one of those fancy new network appliances. We
got into one not long ago from Quantum. 120GB of instant
crossplatform friendly network storage.

I can edit the same director files on this server with mac and pc
with no problems at all.

Are you thinking of FileTyper? A must have for fixing mac file associations.
