Hi d
To answer at least part of your question, generally when you import an image
with importFileInto command, it will default to 24 or 32 bit, never seen it
default to 16 bit, but perhaps it depends on what the bitdepth of the
monitor is. If your using Director 8, you could convert these images down to
8 bit on the fly using imaging lingo and copying the pixels of one image
into a new 8 bit image and then setting the bitmap's image to the new 8 bit
image. you'll take a performance hit by doing that though. You will have
problems doing that if you want to map it to a custom palette that doesn't
yet exist in your movie. I've never experimented that much with running at
movie at 16 bit, but I have used a wide variety of images at various
bitdepths in movies running at 24 bit (I use a lot of 8 bit images despite
running at 24 bit to try to gain some performance edge).
Not sure if this is any help to you.
Sincerely
Mark
