Off the (very) top of my head!

Could something like this work?

Make a 'blend' from 0 to 100 of the background and put it in a loop.
Using a dummy sprite in front of your animation you can then
toggle the visibility of your fade.

Just a crazy idea.  Totally untested and....perhaps even ..shhhsh!
