Do/did those machines have Acrobat 3 or AcroReader 3 installed? IIRC, the 
Acrobat 4 installer recommends un-installing version 3 before installing 
version 4.

Just a shot in the dark here as I've been distributing the Acrobat Reader 4 
installer for some time now. I have no idea how many folks have actually 
had to use it, but like yours, my projectors will install it if no Acrobat 
is detected.

Also, to add to JRS's comment, beware of spaces in the file path or name. 
If you're using Buddy API to detect Acrobat you can also use it to convert 
the filename to its 8.3 equivalent. Something like:

baOpenFile(baShortFileName(pathToFile),"normal)
