Well, I don't know if this is a 'better' way, because in terms of the lingo involved, it's well.. a lot more involved. If you want a less memory-intensive/memory-leak-prone way of doing it, use the binaryIO xtra to directly read the image header. Disadvantage: you need to know the header format for each type of file (ie: jpg vs bmp vs tiff etc). You need the binaryIO xtra. Advantage: mucho fast, no importing then deleting. If you're looking for a quick-fix solution, I'd stick with what you've got.. I used the binaryIO xtra back in D7 to read/compare/edit .BMP files directly from a hard drive.
