Yes there was a typo, but this works just fine

on mouseUp me
   pfUp = not(pfUp)  -- flip state
   if pfUp then
     -- need .member here    |
                                          v
     sprite(me.spriteNum).member = pMemberUp  <--- but, no need for 
member() on right side
   else
     sprite(me.spriteNum).member = pMemberDown
   end if
end

Sorry for any confusion.  (I forgot to give my standard "not tested" warning.)
