Arguing somewhat against my suggestion that STEM is the way to go, I 
suggest that the most important skill is "critical thinking".

I put it in quotes because there are many definitions of the term, 
however, I would go along with any that incorporated two essential 
components:

1) Reason/logic ...
2) ... that is consistent with observed/experienced evidence.

Science is heavily predicated on this, religion is the opposite. A 
scientific theory will fall given a single inconsistency with evidence. 
Religious belief is immune to evidence (IMHO).

STEM incorporates critical thinking but critical thinking extends way 
beyond STEM.
