Gordon, were you telneting to port 80 (or whatever port your proxy uses), or just doing "telnet machine-name" ? Also, is this a socks proxy, or something else? I'm not aware of any browsers under Linux/390 that support socks proxies. There is a package (that I can't remember the name of right now) that will set up a socks environment for any given command which will allow you to use a socks proxy, but it's a bit of a pain to use.
