Elisabeth (taking great care with the spelling!) This may seem to you picky, but not all 2.4.9 kernels, even from the same vendor, are the same. I am running Red Hat Linux 7.3 on my desktop. I have these kernels installed: [summer@skink summer]$ rpm -q kernel kernel-2.4.18-3 kernel-2.4.18-4 kernel-2.4.18-4 [summer@skink summer]$ kernel-2.4.18-4 was released as an update to kernel-2.4.18-3 (I don't know why I have two though). Since then, kernel-2.4.18-5 has been released. These are all very different from the 2.4.18 released by Linus and his friends. Take a few minutes to install the source rpm - kernel-2.4.9-34.src.rpm on RHL will do (this has no impact on your system, and any will do fine), and read the spec file. See all the patches included. Believe that sticking with your vendor's approved kernel unless you have a really good reason to change is a Good Thing on all your production systems. Many times I've run with one of Linus' kernels, but I won't do it on my clients' systems, nor on my office systems unless there is some new feature I want to try, and then I will have a test system to run it on. -- Cheers John Summerfield Microsoft's most solid OS: http://www.geocities.com/rcwoolley/ Note: mail delivered to me is deemed to be intended for me, for my disposition. ============================== If you don't like being told you're wrong, be right!
