Well the Debian build of OpenOffice certainly uses gcc 3.2 unlike almost
everything else Debian which has not yet made the transition (its coming
soon we are told) on the i386 architecture. Other architectures have
apparently already made the transition.

Much, much easier said than done. I've been pounding my head against the
wall with OpenOffice for months now, and I'm not much closer to getting it
built than I was when I started. Now I've got Dave Rivers telling me that
I
probably need to have gcc 3.1 or 3.2 to get it to work. Sigh.

Or let me suggest an alternative:
Use the StarBasic that comes with OpenOffice.org. It's ninety plus percent
compatible with Visual Basic, according to the hardened Windows users on
the
OpenOffice.org discuss list. It's GPLed or LGPLed, I forget precisely
which.
Which means that it is possible to port it to L/390.
