Steve, I'm not aware of anyone using Ditto for this purpose. It may very well work, but I personally can't say. Page 50 of the Distributions Redbook details, step by step, how to download the starter files and write them to tape on a VM system. Perhaps try that and see if it works better. Or, perhaps just try a different tape cartridge.

A older boot tape that I had laying around from a 2.2 Suse s/390 install kernal was able to boot on my virtual machine so it does not seem to be the VM configuration. I assume I was in the correct directory at the FTP site and I downloaded correctly. Thanks for any help.
