We had an application that was targeted to be moved from the mainframe to a client
server environment. At first the server would crash randomly every two or three days
until some tech decided to max out the memory in the box. The server then began to
crash only once a week and the final solution was to replace the hardware platform
entirely. The techs could never figure out why the server was crashing other than to
say it was a memory "leak". It took them three years to finish the move and stabilize
a product/platform combo that is touted as "Enterprise Class".

We IPL our VM twice a year to change the clock and to keep the operators trained.
That's it, final word.
