Not really. My build box has an aacraid board in it. Thats offloading all the
raid work, it can create volumes on the fly, change setups, reconfigure disks,
move raid5 to raid1 live and the like. The hardware interface costs me about
100 CPU clocks to ask it to do a task.

The low end PC stuff has ugly interfaces (from a CPU use perspective) mostly as
a design decision (CPU is cheap on x86 unlike mainframe, while chip is not).
On the other hand even IDE is IMHO cleaner than the variable sized record
insanity S/390 inherited 8)
