I believe that I made it through about half of those, and then gave up. I was just 
surprised that GNOME wasn't somehow more 'self-contained' like  the MySQL or Webmin 
rpm's were.

up2date is your friend, or apt 8)

If I remember rightly the basic order is

glib
gtk+
imlib
ORBit
audiofile
libxml
gnome-libs
gdk-pixbuf
libghttp
libglade
libgtop
gnome-print
control-center
gnome-core

but thats offhand
