Perhaps, but at that point you've got a working network connection, and it's a pretty simple matter to do what has to be done. Fooling around with initrd files, etc., is a lot more tedious.
So you have not looked, have you? The OOC modules for Red Hat come as a seperate additional initrd that is stuffed into your virtual reader or on tape just as the first one. The boot code for the startup kernel has been modified to find that second ramdisk image.
