Hmm... Start the samba service?

The service is called either "smb" or "samba", depending on your distro.
It starts([stops] both smbd and nmbd.

As usual: (assuming the name samba) start:

  /etc/init.d/samba start

stop:

  /etc/init.d/samba stop

restart: (shuts down, and starts again):

  /etc/init.d/samba restart

reload: tell the daemon(s) the configuration was updated:

  /etc/init.d/samba reload

Check status (debian doesn't have this one):

  /etc/init.d/samba status

Also, please provide useful information when asking questions ("I have
samba-2.7.20-497 installed on a connectiva 4.50/s390 system, I have a
problem with the command 'ls': It gives me a strange animation instead
of listing the directory listing")
