Well, that's SuSE. The distro that used to have the following /sbin/chkconfig : #!/bin/sh # don't complain exit 0 Only to replace it with a fully-functioning one in SLES8. Now try to write a script that will detect if you need to use insserv or chkconfig . (hint: "chkconfig || inserv" won't work.
