Just a nit - SuSE SLES-8 has broken Samba out to three services - nmb, smb
and winbind. This makes sense as you often don't want winbind running.
There is an argument for running smb without nmb - though the startup
script will give you a warning:
# rcsmb start
Samba SMB: Needed ldap NMB service not running. You should start it with
Samba SMB: rcnmb start
Starting Samba ldap SMB daemon
done
I'm not sure if the LSB addresses this.
