If you haven't already, download a Knoppix ISO, burn a CD, and boot it on a spare machine (desktop, laptop, whatever). It's very neat stuff in its own right, and provides a very full-featured system which runs almost anywhere. There is some information about customization here: http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/FaqCustomising with step-by-step instructions for how to make some changes and build a new ISO image. In our case, you will want to at least: - install the hercules package (the version from Debian unstable if possible, otherwise build from source) - copy in some DASD images (I've already made a Debian one; there may be others out there for other distributions which allow that sort of thing) - write some scripts to start hercules with different configurations, maybe with a shadow file to keep the bulk of the image on the CD and write changes to the ramdisk - add some icons to the KDE desktop to run the scripts This would be a very handy thing to be able to hand out to folks who are interested in experimenting with Linux/390, given the extremely low barrier to entry. -- - mdz
