I switched to a Linux workstation only recently. The biggest advantage
to me is the integration between workstation and servers that I work on.
With scp the files travel between the workstation and the server. I can
now even mount my ThinkPad directory in my Linux on zSeries server and
decide to do part of the work on the PC and part on the mainframe.

Sure, some things are different than with Windows. And some things lack.
It helps a lot when you're brave and determined to do it. Right now my
use for Windows is limited to what it is best for: applying security
fixes and rebooting. And each time I boot windows my virus scanner needs
to have the machine first, which makes me think twice before I do.
