Actually, I found my problem and it wasn't your problem.

If you look back in this string of notes, you'll see I admit to

./configure
make
make install

It also helps if you do

make modules
make install_modules

I was still trying to load the old 2.4.19 cmsfs.o into 2.4.21 kernel.  No wonder!

I have adjusted my written processes.  Great things, written processes.  They keep you 
from making the same mistakes twice.  But they don't keep you from making new ones.
