Hello, I think I asked that a question last month!

We just went through this analysis for a new extremely important app
(monetary transactions). IBM was a big help in helping provide the info
necessary. While the decision wasn't my groups, I can tell you what the
application considered.

MVS
 - established environment
 - production process such as monitoring/ops/perf tools/backup
tools/security plans/etc all in place
 - difficult to get all the sw installed because hundreds of other apps are
there (this is our env. - your z/OS may be far less complex :) and the
cautious change environment
 - websphere code is "more different" from distributed environment
 - websphere seems to be built for unix then ported to MVS

Linux on z
 - quick implementation (few days)
 - multiple instances easy to create for test/dev/production
 - not entirely est. in "production" support
 - extremely compatible with distributed environment in case we needed to
move to faster blade processors

It really came down to implementation time and commonality with distrib.
systems giving z Linux the win - or at least a try for June with a Sept.
production target.

Hope that's useful. Do talk to your IBM folks - we've had great support
from them.

Yeah, That's right. But given that same hardware resources are given to both
the operating systems, what could be the factors ?

I am able to think of the following factors :

Positives :
1. Since Linux is an opensource, having WAS on zLinux will eliminate the
workload licensing costs for z/OS because of WAS.
2. WAS for zSeries Linux is more advanced and may have features which are
not there in WAS for z/OS
3. Performance of Java applications may also be better in zLinux

Negatives :
1. Extensive debugging tools likes traces, logs, dumps which are there on
z/OS may not be available for Linux for zSeries

Regards,
Srinivas.

It depends now on the size of the machine and whether zAAPs would be
financially justifiable.

There is no simple answer.
