Different VM LPARs does allow you to have different levels of VM and
maybe different service levels. There have been cases where I was happy
to be using a test system for my experiments (and equal number of times
I wished I had done so).

You could have your disks R/W on all systems and use XLINK. This way you
could bring down Linux on one LPAR and bring it up on the other one,
sort of preparing for a VM outage.. You would need to disable MDC which
may be sad. On the other hand, with current technology the storage below
2 GB is a bit more valuable, and with 3 LPARs you have 3 times as much
of it... But I am not sure there will be many situations where the
benefit is enough to justify for multiple LPARs.
