The one thing to remember when using other distributions is that IBM & ISV software are typically supported on SUSE and/or Redhat only. Having a choice is part of what free software is all about, but in some cases your choices are more limited. The open source packages undoubtedly run wonderfully on Gentoo, Debian and Slackware, but you really need to be more careful with vendor software. If that is important to you and your company, then the fee for a supported distribution becomes less of an issue.
