Haven't read my mail lately-if you are still looking to purchase we ordered through
Software House
International.
Since I've just been through this process let me make things a little more clear (or
maybe more fuzzy).
You need to supply the Novell part number for the zSeries SLES8 when ordering through
the reseller you
choose.
I will say I found Novell very good to deal with. I called a phone number on the web
site and was put in
contact with the sales rep for our region.
The reason S390 is half the price is that you only get 32-bit. When you order zSeries
you can run both
32-bit and 64-bit.
But will I get media for both? Not sure. Hasn't arrived yet.
As far as what you get for your money you get maintenance, id to access to the SuSE
data base from which
to pull fixes and maintenance (via YOU), and what SuSE/Novell calls 'upgrade
protection'. In other
words since this is an annual license if SLES9 becomes available in August you will be
able to get it as
well. If next year you are still running SLES8 and SLES9 I'm not sure what happens,
but I was lead to
believe you can still run 2 versions for the price of 1 (or actually 4 for 2 if
running both 32 and 64
bit variations).
The area of support contracts is quite varied: offered by SuSE/Novell based on number
of incidents
called in, by Mainline based on combo of IFL's and machine type(?), by IBM based on
IFL engines with the
best deals for those with more engines, by PSR but I had not called them since I found
out about them
too late. Novell seems to be strictly defect support. We wanted the ability to ask
questions and get
help with configurations. We weren't really interested in consulting services like
Mainline or PSR
actually doing the work for us. All had different prices for 5X8 and 7X24.
