Better than that might be to use TSO Pipelines.
A gross simplification of how that works looks like

        PIPE UDP 514 | XLATE A2E | CONSOLE

Of course,  you would want to do something
more substantial in practice,  first thing being
to handle the sixteen or more bytes of binary on each record.
But the bulk of Unix SYSLOG traffic is textual.
