SYSLOG is simplistic, but reasonably architected on this point. It has seven levels of criticality. (Eight if you count "debug".) Cut-n-pasting from /usr/include/sys/syslog.h: #define LOG_EMERG 0 /* system is unusable */ #define LOG_ALERT 1 /* action must be taken immediately */ #define LOG_CRIT 2 /* critical conditions */ #define LOG_ERR 3 /* error conditions */ #define LOG_WARNING 4 /* warning conditions */ #define LOG_NOTICE 5 /* normal but significant condition */ #define LOG_INFO 6 /* informational */ #define LOG_DEBUG 7 /* debug-level messages */ These wind up as the low three bits of an integer (sent as text, not binary!). Most traffic is "info". Some is "notice". Usually "warning" and above (below?) are the attention getters. The higher bits are used to identify the service or facility. This is (IMHO) where SYSLOG falls down. The list of facilities is enumerated rather than free-form.
