RH 8 and 9 were never released for 390 or zSeries -- RH skipped from 7.2
to AS2.1 (limited availability) and AS3 for the mainframe. The versions
they did release for the mainframe do run under Hercules, but be
prepared to put a fairly beefy machine underneath them if you plan to do
any serious work with it. A 33 MIP emulated 390 is NOT a lot of
horsepower (on a 2.8Ghz P4).

If you plan on doing a lot of testing work, consider renting time on
someone's machine to do it rather than the Hercules route. It'll save
you the setup, and there are several organizations that offer time on
z/990 CPUs, which you *will* want if you're doing compiles and such, or
at least something with more than 100 MIPS of 390 horsepower. Kernel
builds take *eons* under Hercules.

Thanks for the plug, John. The beer and cinnamon rolls are in the
mail...8-)

Actually, we don't market Red Hat at SNA (or actually, any company's
products -- SNA is our research and support division, and selling
product would compromise our vendor-neutral R&D policy), other than
supplemental support to augment and/or replace what RH provides. You'll
need to talk to Sine Anima Associates (our shameless commerce division)
for anything involving product sales. We keep the Chinese wall pretty
high between the two organizations.

Relevant to the question, you'll have to go directly to RH or a RH
reseller to get a distribution (if you can find one that knows what a
mainframe is, and isn't actively trying to convince you to move to
Intel....8-(). Sine Anima has not been successful in getting reseller
status for RH products. Ask me offline what I think of their reseller
registration "process". At least Novell/SuSE return phone calls and
follow up on questions (if prodded hard enough)...8-(

The main advantage to PWD membership for Linux users and developers is
that you have reasonably easy access to a z/VM license, so when you do
manage to get a Linux distribution license, you can run the distribution
in virtual machines. It doesn't help you with Linux licensing costs at
this point.

I think John's estimates are pretty accurate. It depends a lot on how
much Linux expertise you have. See above for suggestion wrt to renting
access to a system; then you can concentrate on the product testing, not
the sysadmin stuff.
